Cracked!

To say I trip and fall a lot is an understatement. Most of my “trips” are no big deal, but I had one a few years ago that was not only frightening, but dangerous as well.

Snappy tomato juice

You could make this recipe two ways. Either follow the recipe below or buy two 46 ounce cans of tomato juice at the store and add remaining ingredients. This is a beverage, not an ingredient for a recipe. It will stand alone. Just serve chilled with a celery stick for a stirrer. Of course, this recipe could be cut in half, but who would want to..

Wildflower Watching

Spring is a great time of year, when the dull brown of winter gives way to fresh grass, soft greens of newly opened leaves, and lots of flower blooms. Actively seeking out wildflowers in their varying habitats is an enjoyable way to spend warming spring days, roaming the woods and fields for some fresh air, exercise, and the challenge of the hunt. An additional challenge if you’re so inclined, is wildflower identification.

Extension Office Welcomes New Employee

Hello! My name is Joshua Bowlin and I am the newest member of the Union County Extension Office. My role is the office administrator. I reside in Washburn where I was born and raised, with my wife Brittany. I grew up on a small hobby farm where I helped my Grandfather take care of many different farm animals. Most of the animals we had might have been my idea. Brittany and I currently have two horses, a dog, and two cats on our farm.

What causes back pain?

While sports injuries or accidents can cause back pain, sometimes the simplest of movements — for example, picking up a pencil from the floor — can have painful results. In addition, arthritis, poor posture, obesity, and psychological stress can cause or complicate back pain. Back pain can also directly result from disease of the internal organs, such as kidney stones, kidney infections, blood clots, or bone loss.

Spit Bath

It’s a southern tradition that I usually experienced in church. On rare occasions it also happened to me in the funeral home. In those places, in front of God and everybody else, my mother felt the need to give me a spit bath. Yes, you read it right: a spit bath.
Let me tell you, I was such a little tomboy. While I am an only child, I have to two uncles who are not that much older than me. Growing up, they were more like brothers. My neighbors and cousins were mainly boys. I didn’t play with other girls on a regular basis until I started kindergarten.

Just a Little Off

I was working away one day at my computer when I heard a laugh just outside my door. Union County Mayor Jason Bailey was standing there. He asked, “Do you always talk to yourself like that?”

Fruity cole slaw

Years ago I added fruit to my cole slaw. Usually shredded apples. This is a better combination. Red peppers instead of green would be pretty, too, as would red grapes instead of the pineapple.

Wild Onions

Each Spring many lawns, gardens and pasture fields grow a crop of wild onions, a plant considered by most to be a weed. However, to the American Indian the plant was considered an important food, using it both as a seasoning and a staple.

Citizen Concern Grows Against Egg Factory; ZERO Commissioners Attend Recent Community Meeting

By Mary Nicholas Johnson

WE CARE. DO THEY? Zero Union County Commissioners attended the March 8 Friends of Sharps Chapel meeting. All were publicly invited at the last Commissioner’s meeting in February. Their “no show” sent a message that was received loud and clear – “We Don’t Care What You Think”.
