Bookers celebrate 20th birthday with Read S'more

Cheryl Booker Walker, 2nd District County Commissioner, and her dog Booker kicked off the 20th anniversary of The Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation by reading a a book. The mascot for GELF, which includes Imagination Library, is an owl named Booker. Booker the owl is celebrating his 20th Birthday Bash by touring Tennessee. Booker’s flight was grounded so his Cousin Reed and Cousin Page celebrated on his behalf.

Union hosts Imagination Library Roundtable

Union County Imagination Library hosted the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Regional Roundtable on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at the Luttrell Library Community Center. GELF is celebrating 20 years of promoting early literacy since its founding under Governor Phil Bredeson in 2004. Mayor Jerry Lawson of Luttrell warmly welcomed the group and shared some of the events to promote children's activities and how important Imagination Library is to Luttrell as well as his own family.

Plainview donates to Imagination Library

The City of Plainview donated $1,000 to Union County Imagination Library.
Mayor Gary Chandler commented that Plainview was glad to support early literacy for our children because learning to read is such an important skill.
The Imagination Library, an initiative of Dolly Parton, was started in Union County by Kathleen Graves. Leadership Union County established and expanded the program as a class project.

Skylar Bates receives 2020 Plainview Scholarship

The City of Plainview made several donations at its June 2020 Board of Aldermen meeting. Mayor Gary Chandler awarded the Plainview Scholarship in the amount of $500 for outstanding academic achievement to Skylar Bates for having the highest grade point average as a graduating senior who resides in Plainview.

Imagination Library Mails Millionth Book

Each month, nearly eight hundred books are mailed out to children across Union County through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation. Maynardville Public Library hosts as the headquarters of the foundation here in Union County, investing their time and efforts in assuring that the hundreds of children in the county that have signed up for the free program are receiving their reading materials each and every month.
