Skylar Bates receives 2020 Plainview Scholarship
Mayor Gary Chandler awards the Plainview Scholarship for Academic Achievement to Skylar Bates
The City of Plainview made several donations at its June 2020 Board of Aldermen meeting. Mayor Gary Chandler awarded the Plainview Scholarship in the amount of $500 for outstanding academic achievement to Skylar Bates for having the highest grade point average as a graduating senior who resides in Plainview.
Skylar plans to attend Lincoln Memorial University this fall to pursue a degree in nursing. Ultimately she hopes to become a nurse practitioner and perhaps manage a clinic. Skylar was active in HOSA and BETA Clubs, played basketball, and performed community service at her church.
Chandler remarked that he was privileged to have taught her parents and Skylar. The mayor also praised Skylar for her accomplishments and noted, “Skylar is an outstanding example of our young people in Plainview. We wish her well and know she will be successful.”
Skylar thanked the city for helping pay some of her college expenses. Skylar is the daughter of Steva and Scott Bates.
The next donation went to the Luttrell Volunteer Fire Department, which maintains a station in Plainview, as well as the base station in Luttrell.
Chief Brad Woods stated that LVFD had fought several structure fires recently. He also cautioned that everyone should be extra careful when burning brush since a gust of wind could turn a small fire into an emergency. Woods thanked the City of Plainview for the quality maintenance of the building and the continuous financial support. Chandler and several aldermen commented on the outstanding job that the fire department does in first response as well as keeping insurance costs low.
Alderman Marilyn Toppins received the final donation of $1000 on behalf of Imagination Library. Imagination Library Union County cooperates with Governor's Books from Birth and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to serve over 725 children in the county under age five with a book to read.
This program has enhanced the early literacy of many children by providing books and tips for encouraging reading. Chantay Collins is the Coordinator of the Union County program. Toppins thanked Chandler and the Board of Aldermen for their concern for literacy and encouraging parents to read to young children.
