Opioid abuse across the country is at epidemic proportions, and the abuse is at its worst in poor rural communities. Of all 50 states in the US, Tennessee ranks third in opioid abuse. Opioid use has ravaged the rural Appalachian region of East Tennessee, both with its prevalence and with its destruction of families.
ICARE is a coalition dedicated to preventing alcohol and substance abuse in Union County, Tennessee. They meet on the last Thursday of each month at 11:30 am at Li’l Joe's BBQ, and the meetings are open to the public.
ICARE's director is Mindy Grimm, and her administrative assistant is Amanda Tucker (owner/operator of Liquid Lightning coffee shop in Maynardville). ICARE does not have 501c3 nonprofit designation, so it cannot solicit funds from the public. ICARE is a member of the Prevention Alliance of Tennessee and is funded by grants.
As the school year comes to a close, graduating high school seniors are busy planning celebrations with their families, friends and classmates. While it’s a time for celebration, it’s also a time for responsibility and accountability when it comes to underage drinking.
Bryan Wheble has been the Pastor at Revival Vision Church of God in Maynardville for five years. In his time within the community, he has been a part of many projects working toward growth in drug and alcohol education in youth and families.
