Macular Degeneration and Me

I have my eyesight checked every year. My poor eyes have been through so much. I try to keep on top of their care. I have had 2 detached retinas as well as a sceral buckle on my right eye. That is a rubber band holding the eyeball in the correct shape. A visceral hemorrhage came along with one of the detached retinas on my right eye as well. There is an extra strong lens over it to help it track with the left one.

All that happened a number of years ago. Last summer a new problem popped up - Macular Degeneration. Scar tissue has formed behind the lens of my left eye, my good eye. I was told my eyesight would worsen and would probably affect my poor old right eye as well. I now have 3 pairs of glasses: one with bifocals for everyday use and watching television, another for reading large type and a third for computer use. Their different colored frames help me tell them apart.

Also, i am now limited to large print. The problem is that there are only a few such books available at the Maynardville Library. When my daughter Anne told them of my dilemma, they had a solution.
The Tennessee Library for Accessible Books and Media is available for people in my situation. The librarian told Anne that they would send me books in large print (#16) at no charge. When i can no longer see well enough to read, they have audio tapes and a tape player available for the sightless, also at no charge.

Anne called the number she was given. They asked what kind of books I preferred. Anne told them Westerns and mysteries, especially Zane Grey and Agatha Christi. I have received books for several months. Wow! what a selection! My favorite authors are sprinkled in among others I have never heard of. New worlds have opened for me. I read every book they send me. Most are great and some not so much so. No matter. Each book is an adventure. I read a book, replace it in its mailing sleeve, reverse the address label and drop it in the mailbox.

If you have a sight problem or are no longer able to read regular print, contact the Maynardville Library. They will give you the necessary details to get started. Or contact the Tennessee Library for Accessible Books and Media, 1001 Rep John Lewis Way North, Nashville, TN 37219. their phone numbers are 1-800-342-338 and 615-741-3915. Good reading!

I have never heard of this program before. Thank you so much for sharing! Have you ever read any of the CJ Box stories of Joe Pickett , Tony Hillerman's Joe Leaphorn or Craig Johnson's Longmire series? Some of my favorites!
