The Union County High School Boys Basketball Team achieved a milestone in 2024 by competing in the Class 3A Sub-state Sectional. The team's 22-11 win-loss record with a district record of 6-4 or 60% propelled the Patriots to a round 1 game with Cumberland Gap in the district tournament in Scott County. The team handily put away the Panthers 83-69. A loss to Clinton in the District Semi-final resulted in a game for 3rd place with the Scott County Highlanders. A buzzer beater by Braxton Buckner in overtime secured the Patriots 72-70 win and got them past Fulton for round 1 of the regional tournament.
In round 1 of the regionals, the Patriots breezed past Carter High of Knoxville to meet Anderson County in round 2. On a 40 feet Braxton Buckner buzzer beater, the Patriots laid the Mavericks to rest 52-49. Unfortunately #1 ranked Fulton overpowered UCHS in the Regional Final. But the one loss still allowed the Patriots to compete in the sub-state sectionals for only the third time in the history of Union County Basketball. However, the Patriots could not overcome the David Crockett High Pioneers.
Bragging rights go to the Patriots during the regular season for defeating Gibbs, Claiborne (x2) Clinton, Pigeon Forge, Cherokee, Scott (x2), and Cumberland Gap (x2).
During the post season play, the Patriots benefitted from the scoring of their outstanding leaders. Kaden Carroll totaled 211 points for 49.1% in 2 pointers and 54 points for 39.7% in 3pointers. Ty Edds shot 186 points for 54.4% in 3 pointers and took 7 charges. Braxton Buckner achieved an amazing 79% from the free throw line plus 92 points in offensive rebounds as well as grabbing 106 defensive rebounds and blocking the opponent's shot 16 times. Trent Perkey amassed 163 assists, 63 deflections, and 67 steals.
Rounding out the post season team were Eli Wilson (36 pts.), Seth Grigsby (5 pts.), Joe Harvey (16 pts.), Trot Russell, Brycen Earl, Max Corum, Ayden Barton, Mason Leonard, and Jaxon Bailey.
Shane Brown, who has 15 seasons as the Patriots Head Coach, became the county's all time wins leader in boys basketball this season with 238 wins. Roger Lynch formerly held the record of 227 wins in 14 years as the Head Coach of Horace Maynard High School. Assistant Coaches are Mike Johnson (HMHS Class of 1994) and Jon Smith (UCHS class of 2000). Earlier trips to the sub-states were accomplished by Coach Brian Jessie in 2009 and Coach Lewis Morris in 1994.
