Luttrell Music Festival showcases legacies
The descendants of Floyd Cramer and Chet Atkins headlined the Luttrell Music Festival in 2022. Jason Coleman and Maegan Taylor, center back row, performed as Nashville Legacy.
The 2022 Luttrell Music Festival was all about legacies. An eager, supportive crowd witnessed the legacy of Luttrell native Chet Atkins as his family members took the stage in the final act of the day. It was also the establishment of a legacy for Mayme Taylor, who birthed the LMF some eleven years ago. Ms. Taylor in her last year as the festival coordinator ceremoniously passed the mic to David Johnson from Plainview who opened the Luttrell Music Festival with prayer and will be in charge of planning the 2023 festival.
Representing the Atkins family was Meagan Taylor, the niece of Mr. Guitar himself. Meagan was accompanied by her friend Jason Coleman, grandson of the famous “slip note” piano player, Floyd Cramer. With Meagan on the guitar and Jason on the piano, both proudly perpetuated the style of their ancestors.
Together Meagan and Jason perform as Nashville Legacy. But the legacy did not stop with Meagan and Jason. Meagan's children entertained with a couple of Dolly Parton songs and Jason's son at the tender age of five accompanied his father on the piano. Spectators, some from as far away as Goodletsville, TN, commented on how much joy filled their hearts as they watched Chet's and Floyd's legacies reborn through their descendants. Some noted that the descendants gave a deeper understanding of “natural talent”.
And talent there was! From 3:00 to dark, the stage was packed with local talent that led up to the Atkins-Cramer family finale. The Beasons, a popular country gospel group, led the artful line up. Robinella continued the talented performances with a mixture of country blues, a bit of funk pop, and a smattering of love songs. Legendary David West and the Ciderville Gang and a toe tapping, crowd hyping Knox County Jug Stompers completed the early performances.
More talent appeared in the form of Zach Summers, who won the Youth Music Competition by performing songs from Elvis Pressly. Zach received a cash prize along with the opportunity to entertain at the Union County Heritage Festival and to join the Ciderville Gang on the Cas Walker Farm Show.
For those who needed more variety to the entertainment, Grainger County Ridge Runners sponsored a cruise- in and the Fritz family hosted a corn hole competition. The crowd chowed down on Uncle Butch's BBQ and smoked bologna sandwiches with Kona Ice, fudge, and boiled peanuts for festival sides and dessert.
The event closed with Nashville Legacy, their family, and the audience singing John Denver's Take Me Home, Country Road. Watch for the legacy to continue with the announced date for the 2023 Luttrell Music Festival, sponsored by the City of Luttrell with the assistance of a grant from the TN Arts Commission. Mayme Taylor plans to travel, but she will be in the audience as David Johnson continues the Luttrell Music Festival legacy.
