George Washington Cherry Bread

February is the month for cherry bread. I don't know if our first president really chopped down a cherry tree. I doubt it. I don't think he made any bread either.

GEORGE WASHINGTON CHERRY BREAD
2 1/2 cups sifted plain flour
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
15 maraschino cherries, chopped
3/4 cup chopped nuts
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup maraschino cherry juice

Sift dry ingredients together in large bowl. Cut in shortening until like coarse meal. Stir in cherries and nuts. Combine liquid ingredients. Add to dry ingredients. Stir only until all flour is moistened. Don't beat. Pour into greased 9 inch loaf pan. Bake at 350 F. for 60 to 70 minutes. Cool on rack. Slice when cold. Makes 1 loaf.
