Delicious !

Chef Zach with one of the pots of delicious spaghetti sauce.
That’s the only word that aptly describes the spaghetti dinner sponsored by the UCHS Culinary Class and the UC Lions Club! Under the direction of their instructor, Chef Zach Hodges, the students made HUGE pots of homemade spaghetti sauce that was rich, thick, and tasty. The aroma of the herbed Italian bread, again prepared by the student chefs, wafted several feet away from the serving table, steering people in that direction.
The meal started with salad, and from there, the well-planned service hit a little rock in the road. The spaghetti table was set up near the salad so the chefs could see the diners lining up for salad. This would allow them to prepare each diner’s spaghetti dish fresh and hot as the person reached them. The next stop was the bread, drinks, and homemade cookies.
The rock in the road? The electric sockets on the wall where the spaghetti tables were set up did not work. The obvious causes were eliminated: no breakers were thrown, the cables were good, and the equipment was running fine (when it had electricity).
Well, if you are a professional chef, you don’t let something like no electricity throw you. The students and Chef Zach moved the whole spaghetti setup back into the classroom kitchen, and student chefs plated the spaghetti, bringing it out to the individual diners. The new setup was a little awkward - the drinks, bread, and yummy cookies were now on the other side of the room from the salad, but diners not only found their way there, but they also came back for seconds!
Many thanks to Union County Lions Energizer Bunny (Lion Secretary Debbie Sylvia-Gardner) and Chef Zack, the two people who coordinated this joint effort. Attendees were well-fed before the outstanding Con Hunley concert (with special guest Justin Terry). The student chefs clearly have a bright future with the organizational, troubleshooting, cooking, baking, serving, and cleaning up skills they have learned in this Culinary Arts course at the UCHS.
