Johnny Ray Thomas
Johnny Ray Thomas-age 74 of Maynardville passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family and his favorite music Wednesday, October 18, 2023. John was a lifelong member of Hubbs Grove Baptist Church and a member of J.C. Baker Lodge #720. He possessed a sharp wit and immeasurable mental toughness. A severe car crash when he was 18 years old left him with physical limitations, but John persevered with willpower and determination to work hard and live a full life. He retired from Y-12 in Oak Ridge. John loved woodworking and would often gift friends with beautiful ink pens he made in his shop.
Preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Lorene Thomas, Maynardville. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Pat Nicely Thomas, who has been a tireless and dedicated caregiver to him in recent years; niece and nephew that he loved as his own children, Zandra (Lowell) Nicely, Joe (Emily) Nicely of Knoxville; brothers, Roy (Thelma) Thomas of Powell, Steve (Kathy) Thomas of Knoxville; sister, Debbie (Tom) Pacheco of Knoxville; uncle, H.E. Leach; aunt, Sarah Mayes; special sister-in-law, Connie Nicely of Maynardville, great niece, Isabella Nicely and several beloved nieces and nephews. A special thank you to John’s long-time friend and physician Dr. Fred Hurst.
The family will hold a private memorial service officiated by Rev. Richard Nicley and music by Rev. Richard and Linda Nicely. The register book can be signed Friday, October 20, 2023, at Cooke-Campbell Mortuary. Interment in Monroe Cemetery, Maynardville.
