Flowers and a Grape Nehi

I love good surprises. I received one years ago that I will never forget.
My husband Tim came in from work one day and asked me to close my eyes and hold out my hand. I knew it was going to be good because he was grinning from ear to ear and his eyes sparkled with excitement. So I closed my eyes and stuck out my hand.
To be honest, I expected a chocolate candy bar. Instead I felt a soda can placed in my hand. I thought he had gotten me a Dr. Pepper, but he hadn't. When I first opened my eyes, I gave a little squeal. In my hand was a Grape Nehi can full of beautiful little pink and purple wildflowers.
While at work, Tim noticed the colorful little flowers growing next to the railroad track. He immediately thought of me and wanted me to have them. After he picked the little flowers, he realized he didn’t have anything to sit them in. Then he saw his empty Grape Nehi can. He cut the top off, cleaned it, filled it with water, and placed the flowers in it.
Even at work, Tim was thinking of me. And I was important enough for him to stop what he was doing to pick them. You see, it’s not the big and/or expensive gifts that really matter, but the little thoughtful ones. God places small treasures in our paths every day to show us how important we are to Him. But in our fast paced world, we often don’t notice them.
I wrote a poem about my sweet surprise. I hope you enjoy it.
When you see little wildflowers
that sway along the way
Do you see them as mere weeds
and go about your day?
Or does their beauty remind you
of someone that you love?
Do you recognize them as blessings
and treasures from God above?
To some, costly and large things
are the best gifts of all
But the most important gifts
may be free and small
My Love gave me the precious gift
of flowers in a Grape Nehi can
For he saw the wildflowers and
picked them for me by hand
With excitement and joy, I displayed
my can for all to see
While it was quaint and simple, it showed
How much he loved me
So don’t underestimate the simple blessings
you come across
For little blessings abound form the one
Who hung on the cross
