The Whittler is 2024 Heritage Festival collectible print
The Whittler, Union County Heritage Festival Collectible Print by Betty Bullen.
Inspired by memories of curled shavings piled on the porch or under the tree to be caught by little children or the wind, “The Whittler” reminds us of a time when grandpas and many of the men would gather to tell stories, swap Case knives, and whittle.
Sometimes their efforts produced a whistle or a fine toothpick. But mostly their efforts made thin curlycues. These gatherings were social and beneficial as a way to relax after the farming or work of the day as well as an escape from the summer heat. Sometimes a lucky grandchild would get a small wooden charm, game, or ornament from one of these whittlers. Not too long ago, a group of whittlers met in Luttrell (Plainview) in the Whittlin' Shack behind Friends Market. They revived the “art” and enjoyed the community and social relaxation.
The 2024 Collectible Print, “The Whittler” is available on October 1, 2024, at Oakie's Pharmacy and Seven Springs Winery. Betty Bullen of Bullen Art, the renowned artist, will sell the print on Festival Day, October 5, at Wilson Park in booth spaces #64 and 65. Bullen has now created 16 collectible prints.
“The Whittler” pairs well with the 2023 Collectible Print, “Stitched with Love.”
Prints cost $20. All proceeds help fund the Union County Heritage Festival each year. Purchase a print to celebrate our 20th year theme of “Remembering Grandpa.”
