Watermelon Miracle
It was kind of embarrassing now that I think about it. Birds have more luck planting seeds than I do.
Our first house had a fairly large flower bed in the front of it. Tim was usually the one who tended to the pretty flowers and little bushes. Sometimes, I tried to help him by pulling the weeds, but that didn’t always go so well. To be honest, there would be times I couldn’t tell the difference between a weed and a flower.
One day I walked by the flower bed and noticed a little vine growing it. I leaned over an examined it to see a little green blob underneath it. When Tim came home that evening I asked, “What vine did you plant in the flower bed?”
“I haven’t planted anything in there.”
So, we walked to the front yard where I politely pointed to the vine with the green glob. “Then what is that?”
“It’s a watermelon.” He laughed. “You’ve never seen a watermelon on the vine before?”
“No, Mamaw and Papaw never planted any.” Yeah, I really was embarrassed at that, but like I said, they never planted any kind of melon. But I was to be embarrassed yet again. “So how did it get there if neither one of us didn’t plant it?” As for me, I was actually hoping for a little miracle. You know, God somehow planted it without our help.
“Are you kidding me? You’re the farm girl who loves science. A bird probably ate some watermelon seed and it came out the other end as it was flying. And it happened to land in our flower bed where it took root.”
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 (KJV)
I think we often underestimate the little miracles in our lives as The Lord supplies our needs every day. The miracle of each breath you take. The miracle of language where we can communicate. And yes, that is a need we have as humans. The miracle of being able to love someone else more than we love ourselves. The miracle of food growing and using the sun to supply it’s needs. I could go on and on. So don’t let any small everyday miracles pass without thanking Him for them.
Tim was right, I should’ve known that little fact, but you know what, it really didn’t change anything in my eyes. God used a little bird to give us a watermelon. Of all the places the seed could’ve landed, it landed in the perfect place to take root. So, I will hang on to my watermelon miracle. Maybe I should pray for chocolate tonight. Wouldn’t it be awesome to find candy bars laying on my front porch?
