Warwick's Chapel Celebrates 150 Years
Warwick's Chapel Baptist Church, Luttrell, Tennesse, established 1869
In June of 1869, the Warwick’s Chapel Community in Luttrell was blessed with a new place of worship. The first church gathering for Warwick’s Chapel Baptist Church was held at the home of John Ferguson, near the site of the old Curtis Phipps home. There were more than thirty-five constituent members who convened and organized the church, twenty-three of whom were from Cedar Ford Baptist Church, three from Cedar Grove Baptist Church, and nine from Powder Springs Gap.
The construction of the main body of the building was completed in 1871 and stands on ground that was donated by J. Sterling Warwick. An addition to the front of the church, including the bell was added several years later. The church wasn’t wired for electricity until 1950.
In 1959-60, four Sunday school rooms were added onto the rear of the building, which is now used for storage, a baptistery, and an office. In the fall and winter of 1965, a basement was added giving the church five additional Sunday school rooms, which are the ones presently used. The basement was dug by hand by three men of the church. During the time of this addition, there was a large donation to the church, plus an organ donated by the Frost family. Several members of the family were present at the celebration.
Much later down the road, in April 2006, an old voting building that was used for Headstart was offered to the church as an option for a fellowship hall, which the church was lacking and had largely outgrown using the basement Sunday school room kitchen. The building was purchased for $1.00 and totally renovated and updated by the church and its hardworking, devoted members.
The church has been blessed with pastors who have sought salvation for the lost through the years. The first church pastor, R.H. Wyrick, served from 1869-73 and again from 1875-1877. J.T. Inklebarger was a monumental leader in the church’s history. In his five years as pastor, he baptized more than one hundred people into the fellowship of the church.
Over the years, there have been thirty-four pastors to grace the church with blessings and guidance. Several served the church twice, and Rev. Ray Headrick served the longest, from 1984-2016. Reverend Stewart Skeen is the present pastor, beginning in 2016. He has been a lifelong member to the church. Deacon’s at WCBC are currently: Keith Brantley, Donnie Wolfenbarger, Jeff Sanders, and Johnny Lay.
The first Protracted Meeting, more currently known as a Revival, ran from October 12 thru 25, 1869 where twelve new members were received. The first person to ever join the church was E.J. Hubbs on the first day of Revival, by enrollment. The first to join by baptism, the very next day, was Sary Murry. Sunday school was organized on February 14, 1915.
On Sunday, June 23, 2019, at 10:30am, the church invited members, guests, and the community to a 150-year celebration. Upon walking into the gorgeous, traditional white country church, while dressed in old-time attire, guests were greeted and given programs and fans for the service. The Choir opened with “Precious Memories”. Member Sharon Lynch was introduced by Rev. Skeen and presented the church history to the congregation.
Next, a candle lighting ceremony was held in remembrance for each former pastor with family members present for some to respectfully light their family candle. The only living former pastor, Rev. Headrick, was present to light his candle as well as bring the message for the service. At age ninety-seven, the oldest church member, Aileen Noland of Seymour, was able to attend and proudly recognized affront the congregation with a host of family members. Oldest lifelong charter member, Jean Skeen, was honored and rejoiced as well as she shared fond memories of the church and its kind folks. Also, during recognitions, individuals who were saved at WCBC were asked to stand, with nearly two dozen present.
Each week at Warwick’s Chapel, Sunday school is held at 10:00am, Sunday morning service is at 11:00am, and Sunday night service is at 6:00pm. Bible study is held each second and fourth Wednesday at 7:00pm. The church has a food pantry and offers a free meal each third Wednesday night at 6:30pm. A clothes closet was created a few years ago, led by member Pat Dyer. Families can call for what they need anytime, but a clothes giveaway is held twice a year; once for back to school in July and once for winter clothing in October. The church also supports the community and its youth through the Frances Waller Scholarship Fund. The community and visitors are openly invited and encouraged to attend anytime. A good time was had by all as smiles and tears of fond memories and new beginnings were shared at the Warwick’s Chapel Baptist Church 150 Year Celebration.
