Walk the Market Returns

UT Extension Union County and the Union County Farmers Market are at it once again; partnering to create healthier, more active lifestyles. When you join us at the market each Saturday, just sign-in and pick-up your pedometer for the day, then walk the market and surrounding areas. When finished, exchange the pedometer for the market bucks you have earned! Thank Reliant Family Health for sponsoring this program and providing the market bucks and incentives.
Since our goal is to create healthier, more active lifestyles, participants will receive a weekly e-newsletter with health tips, a healthy recipe and a schedule of additional walks throughout the week. For every 4 markets or walks you attend, you will be entered in a drawing for some very special incentives.
May is National Preservation Month and we have partnered with Preservation Union County, the Union County Historical Society and Big Ridge State Park to bring you some exciting walks where you can learn more about Union County and East Tennessee.
Additional walks will kick off at 10am on Saturday, May 21 at Big Ridge State Park. There will be no market that day due to UCHS graduation, so we will meet at the gristmill for a tour, followed by a hike on the Ghost House Trail to learn more about the people that used to live there.
Monday, May 23rd at 2pm, will be the kick-off for the new Storybook Trail at the Luttrell Community Park. Attendance will count as one of your additional walks as we will be there to check you in! The Storybook Trail features the book Llama, Llama Loves to Read, bring the whole family for this enjoyable walk!
Sunday, May 29, partnering with Preservation Union County, we will bring you a first! We will be walking the grounds and taking a walking tour of the Bate Ousley home in Sharps Chapel. This brick, Federal style home has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. Come learn more about the settling of Union County, the Sharp family and enjoy a rare glimpse of past lives. Program will begin at 2pm but check back for more information!
Tuesday, May 31, 10am. While it is still cool outside, we will walk and learn more about downtown Maynardville. We have partnered with the Union County Historical Society for this walk. Bring your questions, share your stories of days gone by and, when we get too hot, we’ll head over to the Union County Museum to finish the program.
Once registered, you can look for your e-newsletter for all updates, call UT Extension/Union County at 865-992-8038, and be sure to follow all partners and sponsors on Facebook. June will be National Great Outdoors Month – let’s see where our walks lead then!
This program is brought to you by UT Extension/Union County and Reliant Family Health.
