Walk the Market!

Walk the Market!, as Union Gets Movin’ with the Farmers Market once again! This program is designed to promote a more active lifestyle increasing overall health, as well as building community. Afterall, the market is “where the community meets.” The program will begin on Saturday, August 14 at the Union County Farmers Market – sign-up when you arrive! They are open from 10am – 1pm through Saturday, October 2.

This program is sponsored by UT Extension Union County and Caring Medical Center. Participants may pick up a pedometer at the UT Extension booth, walk the market, Wilson Park, or the high school; then exchange the pedometer for Market Bucks. Market Bucks may be spent on farm fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy products (no ice cream – sorry!) and food producing plants. Pedometers are available for participants ages 5+ with Market Bucks being awarded based on steps taken during the market trip.
Since we would like to encourage more active lifestyles, we will also be offering sponsored, weekday walks throughout the 7 week program. Hikes may be themed, like a history hike or a stroller hike, and will be held at various locations throughout the county. Caring Medical Center will be sponsoring these hikes with additional incentives and, of course, everyone will go home with a pedometer! Since we plan to offer at least one hike/week, check with UT Extension for an updated schedule or, sign-up to receive email updates.
