Use Care When Lifting

It’s sometimes unavoidable that we have to lift a heavy or cumbersome object. Using some basic precautions, you can minimize the likelihood of pulling a muscle or otherwise injuring yourself in the process of lifting.

The most important thing to remember is to bend at the knees when lifting a heavy weight. Let your leg muscles do the lifting. If you bend at the waist and straighten up with the weight, you’re making your back muscles bear the weight. Carry a weighty object close to your body, about waist height, as you move it. If you have to turn while holding the weight, pivot your feet; don’t just twist at the waist.

The older you get, the more susceptible you are to injuring yourself when lifting something heavy. This is because your flexibility and strength are not what they were when you were younger. Also, be careful moving heavy items when you are tired. Fatigue can cause you to move awkwardly. Carrying a heavy item also can strain the shoulders. The rotator cuff is a set of muscles that help support the shoulder joint and allow for its movement. Repetitive motion and lifting something heavy are two ways to injure the rotator cuff.

If you develop back, shoulder or neck pain, whether it’s from lifting or caused by some other activity, visit a chiropractor. Chiropractic is a proven effective way to ease lower back pain.
