Union County Candidate Forum Set for June 11 at Maynardville City Hall

Union County Business & Professional Association will host its candidate forum on Tuesday, June 11th, at noon at Maynardville City Hall, 125 Johnson Rd. All state and local candidates have been invited. R. E. Ellison, a Democrat, will face the August primary winner between incumbent Senator Frank Niceley and newcomer Jessie Seal. Both Ellison and Seal plan to attend. Patty Mills, who is running unopposed for Republican State Executive Committeewoman, has also been invited. Representative Dennis Powers is running unopposed for the Tennessee House of Representatives.

Two local office holders, Assessor of Property Randy Turner and Highway Superintendent David Cox, will be elected in August with no opposition.

The Union County District School Board races have more than one candidate in each race. Marty Gibbs, School Board Chairman representing the 1st District, chose not to run. Jama Richardson and Charlie Hamilton will square off for this seat. Another open seat occurred when educator David Coppock, after multiple terms on the Board of Education and some 61 years of education service, also decided to officially retire. Vying for the 4th District position will be Jimmy Carter and Chris Cooper. The 2nd District will have Brenda Jessee challenged by certified write-in Terry Washam. Harold Cooke is challenging incumbent Andrew Reed for the 6th District School Board seat.

The public is invited. Attendees will have an opportunity to offer written questions to the candidates to be asked by the moderator.
