Two Thousand flocked to 42nd Big Ridge Bluegrass Festival

Bluegrass, gospel, country and traditional Appalachian music resounded throughout the ridges of Big Ridge State Park as quartets, quintets and duos took the stage at the 42nd Annual Bluegrass Festival in August.
Opening the event was Wild Blue Yonder Band with their Celtic tunes mixed with familiar bluegrass and gospel songs. Norris Freeway and Tennessee Brushfire followed with some outstanding melodic instrumentals and lively fiddlin’.
The Whippersnapper String Band stole everyone's hearts with their family group that ranged from a little sunshine of four years old, a bass player of 13, a banjo player of 12, and mom and dad on mandolin and guitar.
The Chestnut Ridge String Benders shared their spirited gospel and bluegrass arrangements. Scrap Iron, John Alvis, and the Beason Family rounded out the evening as twilight moved to night.
Ranger Josh Powell organized the event to the delight of hundreds of hand clapping, toe tapping attendees. Visitors lined up for barbeque, lemonade, funnel cakes and beans and cornbread.
Craft vendors offered handmade jewelry, woodcraft, needlework, and honey. Bonnie Peters, Union County Historian, was on hand to share and sell her many books. Antique trucks, cars, and roadsters covered the lawn below the historic CCC Gatehouse.
Remember to sign up on the link on the park Facebook page for the End of Summer Saunter at 10 a.m. on September 16 to enjoy one last summer hike on the trails.
