Tai Chi is Here

Family & Consumer Sciences/4-H Extension Agent Alyshia Victoria Takes the first Tai Chi class through the beginning moves.

Tai chi is a Chinese martial art practiced worldwide for health benefits, defense training, and meditation. It has been observed for centuries and is one of the oldest and best-known techniques that characterizes contrasting and complimentary movements.

If you’ve ever wondered if this form of exercise is a good fit for you, you can still explore that option. Thanks to UT Extension and Family and Consumer Sciences/4-H Extension Agent Alyshia Victoria, the method of Tai chi is being taught in Union County.

“We started classes last week with a focus on Arthritis aid and falls prevention,” said Victoria. “We meet each Monday at Miller’s Chapel United Methodist Church.”

Classes began Monday, April 11 at 11 a.m. and will include eight sessions. April 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16, and 23 with a final session May 30.

“During the sessions, we are learning a series that includes warm-up stretches, eight basic movements, eight advanced movements, and a cool down,” said Victoria.

The entire cost of the series of sessions is $34 and includes access to a private Facebook group with videos and resources for participants to practice and continue in the comfort of their home, and a YouTube video to keep participants up and running between classes.

“The art form’s movements are gentle and slow, flow smoothly, and are said to help with balance and arthritis,” said Victoria.

If you wanted to sign up but missed the first class, you have until week three (April 25) to join. Victoria does not recommend trying to catch up after that date.
