Summer Sewing with 4-H

Summer Sewing with 4-H

A combination of enthusiastic 4-H members, sewing machines, and several summer afternoons results in fun, learning, and handmade items. This summer eight 4-Hers came together periodically in July and August at UT Extension Union County to learn how to use a sewing machine and fashion sewn articles. The members first had to obtain their "Operator's License" and demonstrate that they could use a sewing machine with skill, dexterity and safety. Once proficient at using the machines, the members went on to sew pillowcases, potholders, and circle skirts. For several, this was their first attempt at machine sewing, while others had previously participated in after-school sewing classes last year with Union County 4-H. Volunteer leader Debby Morgan, with help from Mary Morgan, led 4-H members Gracie Tindell, Meradeth Whitley, Joannah Kadron, Meredith Maggard, Lucy Tindell, Gracie Lloyd, Emmagayle Malone, and Emily Sizemore in this fun project. Although summer sewing sessions for now have ended, a fall 4-H sewing workshop is planned for members in the 6th grade and up on Tuesday, October 9th, during Fall Break. For more information about this workshop call Ashley Mike at the 4-H office at 865-992-8038. Class size is limited so call soon.
