Step on It

Being the graceful person that I am, nothing is truly safe from my feet . Let me put it to you this way, if it’s on the floor, I will eventually step on it. Or if it’s large like a space heater, I may kick it, knock it over, and then trip over it. Yes, I have done that. Actually, I like to brag that not many people can top my “step on it” abilities. That being said, my Mamaw Jo had a “step on it” occurrence that was unlike anything I had ever achieved.
One afternoon I was at my grandparents’ house. I think I may have been a teenager at this time. Anyway, my Mamaw Jo was working in the kitchen as I sat the couch and watched TV. Suddenly, a high-pitched squealing pierced the air. I didn’t think it was coming from the TV, but I leaned forward and turned it down anyway. The horrible sound persisted. To be honest, it was kind of creepy because I could hear the distress in it. If I was correct, then that something alive had to be making that noise. Plus, whatever was making it, had to be close because it sounded as if it was coming from inside the house.
I looked around me. The only thing I noticed was Mamaw Jo standing behind the open refrigerator door in the kitchen. Before I could ask her if she knew what was making that squealing noise, I heard her scream: “I swannie! I’m standing on a mouse’s tail!”
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.” Psalm 37: 23-24 (KJV)
Even though we (mainly me) don’t always pay attention to where we are stepping, The Lord directs the steps for those who follow Him. Still yet, we stumble from time to time, and when we do, we are still in His hands. To me, that is so much comfort. I can’t imagine living without His Grace.
Mamaw Jo stepped off of the mouse and it scurried off. She literally trembled all over. I did feel sorry for her, but to be honest, I also felt sorry for the mouse. Having a grown human stand on its little tail couldn’t have been too pleasant either. I bet that little guy never again ventured back into the kitchen.
