Snow Date

The Christmas Dance was my favorite high school dance. I saw it as a special evening full of beautiful decorations, friends, and fun. And, to be honest, a little innocent romance was nice too. Fortunately for me, the Christmas dance of 1982 had a little unexpected surprise.

I was especially excited about that dance. Tim agreed to take me even though he had graduated in June of that year. While there, we had the best time with our friends. The slow dances were nice too.

As we all left, we were surprised to see it was snowing and there were already a few inches laying on the ground. To me, it was magical watching the snow fall in the school’s night lights. Once we got into Tim’s truck, I was concerned about him getting me home and then him getting home as well. He wasn’t worried about it since we were in his dad’s truck. By the way, that’s when I realized just how much Tim loves to drive in the snow.

Once we pulled in the driveway, I grabbed hold of the door handle.

“Wait a minute. You can’t walk in the snow in hose and dress shoes. Your feet will get wet,” he told me.

Thankfully I didn’t reply with the thought that popped into my head: “I can’t grow wings and fly.” Instead, I answered, “So, what am I supposed to do?”

Tim slid out, walked around to my truck door, and opened it. “I’ll carry you to the front door.”

He politely picked me up in his strong arms and plowed through the snow.

“Aren’t you afraid of falling?” I asked. Yes, being one who falls a lot, I was little concerned about that.

“Nope. Don’t worry, I have you.”

When we reached the safety of the front door, he gently sat me down on the porch. “See, I got you here and you’re feet aren’t wet.”

Needless to say, I was totally blown away. What a sweet, thoughtful, and romantic gesture. I will always cherish that memory. That being said, I hope he never has to do that again. For one, I am not as small as I was at that time and he’s back isn’t that great any more either.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, faith,” Galatians 5:22 (KJV)

One of the things I admire about Tim is how he truly cares about others. He tries to bring joy and show God’s love whenever he can. In fact, I have often told people his heart is better than mine. They usually laugh and I tell them they shouldn’t laugh for I am very serious.

Have you made a difference in somebody’s life by showing your fruit of the Spirit?
