Sciatica and pregnancy
During pregnancy, a woman’s body goes through many changes. Obviously, it’s a wonderful phase of life, but it’s also a challenging time. Extra weight brings a shift to the center of gravity, which causes new sensations, and, in some cases, discomfort.
One of the more common complaints during pregnancy is a condition called sciatica, a sharp, shooting pain that starts in the buttocks and radiates down the leg into the calf and sometimes all the way to the foot. The pain is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, which, at roughly the diameter of your little finger, is the largest nerve in the body.
Pregnancy-related sciatica generally develops in the second or third trimester, when the baby is approaching its peak weight. Chiropractic treatment, including massage, can be effective in easing the discomfort.
Among the steps a woman can take to minimize the likelihood of developing sciatica is wearing sturdy, supportive shoes — flats, or those with a small heel. Shoes like these are helpful in keeping a pregnant woman’s weight balanced. It’s also helpful to avoid sitting for long periods of time. Sleeping on a firm mattress is also very important for supporting your back and pelvis.
Talk with your chiropractor for other recommendations on treatment or lifestyle adjustments you can make to avoid or get some relief for pregnancy-related sciatica.
