Ramblings
Country Connections By James and Ellen Perry
Sitting on my porch listening to “Analog” by Brennen Leigh. Brennen is a songwriter, singer and excellent guitar player. She is a breath of fresh air in country music. Brennen left Austin, Texas, for Nashville and I hope Nashville doesn’t ruin her. Brennen released a tribute album to Lefty Frizzell and it’s a great album. Brennen has lots of her songs on the internet. Here are some of her songs, “Same Dream,” “In Texas in a Band,” and “Carole With an E.” Check her out. Brennen is also a 5-ft.-10-in. beauty.
Let’s not forget Thanksgiving Day coming up this month. We need to give thanks every day of our lives for what the only God of heaven gave to us humans. Everything that mankind needs for life God provided: from food, water, the intelligence to use our natural resources to clothe ourselves, build homes for warmth in winter, to shield us from the elements, the intelligence to build automobiles, airplanes, trains, ships, and have dominion over animals, birds and creatures of the sea. Also, to study creation and see how perfect it is until some humans tries to change nature and ruins what God gave us in our human beginnings, when we were created
It is good to have a day of Thanksgiving. We need also to give thanks to the almighty every day. But going back to celebrating Thanksgiving and the Thanksgiving dinner, I have my maternal side living in LA (That’s lower Alabama) in the Dothan area. I moved to my grandparents’ home during 1962, completed high school and went to work for Freeman Company which later became Freeman International. My first duty at Freeman Company was to clean the bathroom. It was a mess. I used an entire can of Ajax to clean it.
I progressed into the warehouse, then to the delivery trucks delivering outdoor sporting goods throughout Alabama, Georgia and Florida, later moving up to sales as a traveling salesman calling on customers in all three states.
In 1980 I was asked to become a buyer for Freeman International, buying all domestic products which includes blue water fishing tackle, fresh water fishing tackle, camping, archery, outboard motor parts and accessories, long guns, hand guns, shooter and hunter accessories, muzzleloading and backpacking accessories. I had, during my twenties, acquired a commercial pilot license and flew the top corporate employees to different meetings for business purposes.
Sometimes it required a seven-day-a-week schedule. I have met and became friends with some of today’s popular fishing, boating and hunting celebrities. Some are still alive and can occasionally be seen on TV shows. I enjoyed it immensely. I think back in time, as all men do, and can relive it in my memory. I give thanks to my creator for being blessed so much. There is no way today a country boy can start as I did and have a working life as I had.
Television doesn’t have my interest anymore. The great shows such as the Ed Sullivan Show, The Andy Griffith Show, The Jack Benny Show, The Red Skelton Show, The Amos and Andy Show, Gunsmoke, Hee Haw, The Lawrence Show and Perry Mason are not there anymore. Today’s shows have too much woke and not enough stroke. I watch videos almost every night on the internet and enjoy videos such as “Operation Flying ICE with Sheriff Grady Judd,” “Larry’s Country Diner With Nadine,” and The Red Holland videos which I was on five or six times. Check these out. I believe you will enjoy them.
It’s now dusk and time to look across our yard for our late afternoon visitors. There happens to be a doe and two fawns who graze our front yard every late evening and at twilight in the mornings.
Gotta go, so I’ll see you next month.
