President Trump’s First State of the Union Address

President Trump's First 100 Days

Tuesday, January 29, 2018 at 9:00pm President Trump will deliver his first State of the Union Address. The State of the Union Address is given to fulfill rules in Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution for the president to “give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient”. President Trump will have the unique opportunity to speak, in the House Chamber, before Congress, the Supreme Court Justices, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Joint Chiefs and extinguished guests. It will be a time for him to talk about the economy and lay out an agenda for the upcoming year.

President Trump’s unorthodox approach to politics and government still confounds the media and members of Congress (Republican and Democrat); therefore, the suggestions for President Trump’s speech abound; some say he should talk about inclusiveness while others discuss possibilities of apologies to those he has offended. Ironically, the naysayers continually forget that his diplomatic and political methods are working. Hopefully, President Trump will continue to march to his own beat and discuss the following: The success (present and future) of his tax plan, health care and the wall.

Although President Trump’s tax plan is young, it has had immediate success; companies are giving bonuses and raising wages. His historic tax plan also promises American prosperity for the future as large corporations discuss bringing plants, and potentially millions of jobs, back home to U.S. soil. For example, according to CNN Apple is bringing $400 billion dollars back to America. Additionally, the Singapore based company, Broadcom Limited, plans to bring $20 billion to the U.S. each year. President Trump is optimistic that this is the beginning of many more companies choosing to take advantage of the tax breaks, and he will likely expound on his tax plan’s success.

President Trump wasted little time in ridding the American people of the burdensome health care tax penalty; however, health care has progressed very little since then. President Trump campaigned on repealing and replacing “the disaster” of Obamacare. He must remind the American people, and Congress, of his promise and outline a detailed health care replacement. Reform should begin with his promises of tort reform and interstate health care commerce.

We are just one year into Trump’s presidency, but time is running out for the promised wall. The president must remain steadfast in his desire to secure the border and protect the American people. The first step is to finance the wall before the budget is passed next month. The threat of another government shutdown looms, but Trump’s supporters long to see Republicans continue to get the job done without allowing Schumer and his comrades to bully them. He has to sign a budget bill into place, and Republicans have the House, Senate and Presidency. Trump was elected for the wall; he must exhort Congress to take action.

The State of the Union Address should last an hour or more and will cover many topics. Ideally, President Trump will remain true to form and focus on his many accomplishments while challenging Congress to fulfill many more campaign promises the American people are longing for. Hopefully, he will leave political correctness and coddling up to the media.
