Plainview seats elected officials
Mayor Gary Chandler takes the oath of office to start his third term as Mayor of Plainview while Vice Mayor Richard Phillips assists.
City Judge Darrick Edmondson administered the oath of office to Mayor Gary Chandler, Alderman Gordon Bright, and Alderman Rebecca Lock at the July meeting of the Board of Aldermen.
Chandler and Bright are incumbents while Lock is a newcomer who takes the seat voluntarily vacated by Marilyn Toppins at the end of her appointed term.
Toppins was recognized for her service to Plainview along with two outstanding and dedicated Plainview citizens, Curtis “Curley” Bates and Thelma Imogene Seltzer. Both Bates and Seltzer were memorialized in formal resolutions for their participation in the formation of Plainview as a city and for a lifetime of service that made them cherished members of the community.
The board agenda included several business items. The Plainview Planning Commission recommended the splitting into two parcels the Velma Nease property at the corner of Tazewell Pike and Corryton Road and rezoning the property from C1 to a combination of R1 for the back parcel and C1 for the parcel that fronts Tazewell Pike. When the Board approved the rezoning, Mr. Cart, the new owner exclaimed that he “can't wait to be a part of Plainview.”
The board tightened up the political signage regulations. The revision will not affect the August 6 election, but in November and future elections, candidate signs will be allowed two days prior and must be removed one day after the election or Plainview maintenance will discard them. The revision also addresses the prohibition of yard sale signs and other advertising on city right of ways or city property and will take effect after a public hearing and second reading in August.
The Plainview FY2021 Budget has already been approved by the state comptroller so the board approved some cleanup budget amendments to finalize the FY2020 Financial Report.
Finally, Plainview is using the Governor's Local Support Grant of $59,000 on city streets and set up a separate interest-bearing account to track these expenditures as required by the state.
The next meeting of the Plainview Board of Aldermen will be on Tuesday, August 11, at 7 p.m. with the Planning Commission meeting at 6:30 p.m.
