Open Letter From The Director of Schools

Director of Schools Dr. Jimmy Carter

All:

As you know, the Governor has recommended that all schools remain closed through this academic school year. Union County Public Schools will be following the Governor’s recommendation.

The Union County Public School leadership team met on Thursday, April 16, 2020 to plan for the remainder of the school year. While our teachers, parents and students have worked extremely hard over the past month, our plan was meant to be short term. We realize the challenges of our short-term plan and are revising the plan beginning immediately.

As of Monday, April 20, 2020, teachers will be making weekly contacts with their students in order to offer any assistance to students and get up-to-date counts for food distribution. The schools will not be taking grades or attendance for the remainder of this academic school year. However, students will have an opportunity to improve current grades and should contact their teachers for more information if interested. Otherwise, their grades will reflect the grade that the student had on March 13, 2020. Any grades that have been taken after March 13, 2020, will only be used to improve a student’s average.

The school system will be sending out enrichment activities for students as well as activities to keep students engaged academically. All of these activities are optional and K-5 materials can be found on the Union County Public Schools website beginning April 27th, 2020. UCPS does highly recommend that students remain engaged through some or all of these activities to avoid an “academic slide” for next school year. We also recommend a minimum of 20 minutes uninterrupted reading each day.

Each school is looking at dates in May that students may come to the school to pick up any personal belongings, picture proofs and yearbooks as well as to return any school property. We will utilize whatever guidelines the CDC has in place at that time to make this happen.

We are so grateful for your patience and understanding during this unprecedented time.

Thanks,

Dr. James E Carter
