Not Me This Time

My best friend and cousin Lynda has been with me on many of my misadventures throughout the years. To be honest, I don’t mind our fun and laughter being at my expense. But then came the day she had her own.
Lynda used to be in direct sales. When the new catalogs came out, she would deliver them to her customers by placing them in their mailboxes as she drove home from work. Unfortunately for her, some of the mailboxes were not so easily reached in that they stood on the roadside where they could only be reached from the passenger side of a car. In those situations, she usually pulled into the driveways and walked the books to the mailboxes. But on this one day, that took a dangerous turn.
Leaving her car door open, Lynda leapt out of her car and walked to the mailbox. After shoving the catalog book into it, she turned back to see her car slowly rolling forward. That’s when she realized she must have not put it into park. The driveway being at a slight incline had kept the car from immediately rolling after she got out.
She chased after her car as it rolled closer and closer the garage. Since she had parked at an angle, the car began to turn toward the front corner of the house. Now, are you wondering why she couldn’t quickly catch up to it? While the car was moving slow thanks to the incline, Lynda was unable to place a lot of weight on her ankle. A few years earlier, she had fallen and broken it.
Finally, she was able to gain on the runaway car and hop into the driver’s seat. At that point, her
car was in the flower bed when it stopped mere inches from the house. To this day, she doesn’t know if her stepping on the brake or the car’s safety feature stopped its rampage up the driveway.
Lynda backed it up and got out of it to see if there were any damages, but this time she made for certain the car was in park. Not only had the car not hit the house, but it also didn’t do any damage in the flower bed. Well, except for a small garden flag that was bent way over. Thankfully, it was on a thin post and she was able to bend back to straight.

“A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.” Psalm 68:5 (KJV)
Lynda requested this verse and I can see why. It is very personal to her in that her father passed away suddenly when she was only eighteen years old. She was comforted by the fact The Lord was indeed watching after her and her mother. Do you trust Him and let Him be your comforter?
Knowing her customer was working with church youth that night, Lynda went straight to her and told her what had happened. They both got a good laugh out of it. When she told me, I not only laughed, but felt a little relieved as well. It wasn’t me this time.
