Not a 'fowl' ball

By Jeff Brantley
I represent the 5th District of Union County (Sharps Chapel and Speedwell side). A controversy has arisen about the location of a chicken/pharmaceutical farm in Sharps Chapel. Some are complaining about property values, odor, contamination, etc. Most of the resistance comes from lake lot property owners who are approximately a mile away from the proposed business.
Let me say this ... I want to co-exist with transplants that have moved into the district. Granted, they do make up about 11 percent of Union County’s property tax base. I have always listened to the views and explained possibilities, legalities, etc. of our district with them.
Now ... I have spoken with a majority of Sharps Chapel citizens. they are in favor of the business.
This business isn't asking for any tax relief from the county.
This business will be regulated by the EPA.
This business is a first-class operation with the many restrictions it levies upon itself.
This business could provide 30 jobs. I have spoken with a few residents who are interested in pharmaceutical and veterinary positions―people who are now active in those professions. There have been many inquiries about general labor and maintenance services.
Sharps Chapel wants this!
At one time I co-leased this farm. The only way contamination could reach the lake is through a tsunami.
The landscaping of this historic farm is not changing. It will still be in an agricultural setting.
This business will produce eggs for vaccines. Most vaccines are created from eggs (I think polio was one of the first).
Some of these same folks tried to regulate old buildings that are falling and old farm machinery in the field as an eyesore.
In a nutshell ... if you wanted all of these restrictions, why did you leave where you came from?
The people of Sharps Chapel don't desire to have a Homeowners Association.
