Meet Locals

As the holiday season approaches, bringing with it delicious fall flavors and promises of snowcapped mountain views, many of us are drawing up our gift lists or wish lists. Some of us with little ones have already received our Christmas catalogues from Amazon and Target in the mail, whether we wanted them or not. My children eagerly flipped through the pages of cheaply made toys, circling their favorites and chatting amongst themselves. As I ease dropped on their conversation, I imagined all the money these catalogues bring in for the big box stores.
Although I will inevitably fall victim to purchasing some cheap stocking stuffers or junk from Walmart, this season I am making an effort to jump on the “shop local” movement and support my community by through conscientious purchases. But, where do I even start? I am guilty of having bought into the commercialized holidays, partly due to not being allowed to participate in them as a child if they weren’t Christ centered. I felt cheated, looking back, and gravitated towards creating the Hallmark movie holidays that I imagined I was denied and fighting the crowds for Black Friday sales. Luckily, every few years or so, I manage some personal growth and come to understand my parents more, while on my own journey through parenthood.
So, with the power of the pen, this season I am sharing my mission to shop local by highlighting members of our community so we can boost the local economy and support the small businesses run by our neighbors.
To kick off this series, I am introducing, Jesse Convery of Maynardville, owner/operator of Convery’s Automotive Detailing, husband and father extraordinaire. Originally born in Jersey, Jesse’s family moved to Maynardville when he was a teen. He is a graduate of Union County High School, a longtime supporter and member of the community, and a sponsor of nearly every ball field in the area.
His passion for automotive detailing can be traced back to his early childhood, having grown up in his father’s auto shop. By the time he was ten years old, he was trusted with polishing and sanding cars in his dad’s shop. He learned a valuable skill but he also learned the meaning of hard work, and what it is to have work ethic. From a young age, it was instilled in Jesse to work for it, if he wanted something as a child, his father allowed him to work in the shop to earn it. This work ethic remains central to Jesse’s lifestyle and has got him where he is today, by never giving up and always willing to go the extra mile to get the work done.
He is no stranger to long hours and hard work, having travelled all over the country performing EPA testing for over a decade. It wasn’t until Jesse got married that he gave up the road. The travelling life sounded exciting to the newlyweds with Misty Chittum, of Maynardville, eagerly agreeing to travel with her husband to his work sites. After their first trip to San Antonio, it became clear to Misty that there’s no place like home, and she yearned to be back in her hometown.
As a man who prioritizes family, Jesse took very little time in deciding to give up the road and switch careers, so that he and his wife could settle in and enjoy a more stable lifestyle. Jesse took a job with Archer Air Conditioning, but his love for auto detailing was always present. As he struggled to find an auto shop that would stay open late enough for him to get to after work, he decided it was necessary to do it himself. No one would meet the standards his father had taught him to strive for anyway, thus, Jesse created an evening and weekend only auto shop that caters to drivers who work during the day.
After a long day's work, Jesse opens up Convery’s Automotive Detailing in Maynardville from 6pm-11pm on weekdays, from 10am-11pm on Saturdays, and 10am-6pm on Sundays. You can often find him in his shop alongside his young apprentice, his seven-year-old son, who has already decided to follow in the Convery legacy by taking over dad’ shop someday.
Convery’s Automotive Detailing specializes in auto detailing, paint corrections, and ceramic coatings. With an eye for detail and the philosophy of “going above and beyond to treat customers the way I would want to be treated when I drop off my vehicle,” Jesse is striving to “perfect one vehicle at time.”
Jesse holds a certification in nearly a dozen different ceramic coatings. His business is licensed and insured, so you can expect the utmost quality when choosing a service for yourself or a loved one. This holiday season, you might consider giving the quality gift of a ceramic windshield coating for a special someone in your life who could benefit from a clear view and better visibility during the winter. I know quite a few moms, myself included, who love to receive the gift of detailing so someone else can clean for us! Whether you decide to give a specific service, or a gift card this season, know that a gift from Convery’s Automotive Detailing is one that will surely be appreciated and supports a local business.
