Masters of Light

"God Shed His Grace On Thee" by G. Harvey

Almost everyone recognizes the late Thomas Kinkade (1958 - 2012) as the "Painter of Light". His paintings feature glowing highlights in pastel colors of gardens, streams, stone cottages, light houses, and mainstreets most likely inspired by his hometown of Placerville, CA. It is said that 1 of every 20 Americans own a copy of one of his beautiful light filled paintings. Kinkade protected the phrase "Painter of Light" through Trademark. Though the phrase was originally used to describe English painter J. M. W. Turner (1775 - 1851), a child prodigy described as an artistic genius.

Gerald Harvey Jones known as 'G. Harvey' (1933 - 2017), is another note worthy painter of light. The Texas Artist has works exhibited in the Smithsonian Institution, the National Archives and the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. Harvey's paintings tell a story of unseen emotions such as courage, determination, faith, pride, and compassion with his remarkable and stunning use of light.

Perhaps the most notable of the Old Masters for their use of light is Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675). Almost all of his works are of domestic interior scenes of middle class life lit by a window on the left. Experts debate how he captured such perfection and pearly light in his paintings. Some of his most famous are "Girl With A Pearl Earring", "Milkmaid" and "Love Letters". To spend hours viewing and studying the works of these and other great Master Painters of Light is a great joy for me. One from which I never tire. The works of these artistic masters have helped me see and experience our world in a different way.

When dawn breaks and the sun brings light to world, when on occasion the sky blazes with color just before the last bit of light falls into night, when the darkness of night is lit by the heavenly bodies, when I see the sparkle in a new born baby's eyes, when I see the last bit of life fading from someone just before they move from this world to the next, it is then that I know I have witnessed the work of the 'Greatest Master'.
