A Makeover for Janet's Hair Salon

Janet’s Hair Salon is a remedy to style, beauty, and friendship within the Maynardville community. For nineteen years, folks have been visiting the salon for their beauty needs as well as laughter amongst friends. Janet Holloway, owner and operator of the salon, bought the shop in 1990, and business has been growing ever since.
Her shop turned twenty-nine years old in August. Janet recognizes the blessings of the shop to her life and thanks God daily for her health so she can keep working. She says, “I just want to keep learning. I pray I can still be doing hair at 80; cut down a bit, but still work some, because I love my job and my customers and I want to keep the shop friendly and caring.”
Janet has been in the beauty business for forty years. As a child she loved playing with hair and giving her baby dolls haircuts. She took cosmetology at Halls High School, but didn’t complete enough hours for a license. Later she married the late Bill Holloway and had a beautiful daughter, Beth. She soon went to work at Standard Knitting Mill where she quickly figured out that the Standard was not her calling. She went back to school at Dennis Young’s School of Beauty and has been happy with her career ever since. Before opening her own shop, Janet worked at Pat’s Beauty Shop in Halls for nearly twelve years.
The salon is located at 3625 Maynardville Highway and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 6:00pm and later by appointment. Staff includes Janet Holloway, owner and operator; Bobette Smith, operator; Melinda Gilley, nail technician; and proudly welcomes Allison Campbell, operator, to the newly remodeled shop. The talented team of ladies offer many services including perms, colors, highlights, lowlights, waxing, cuts, shampoo and sets, and shampoo and blow drys as well as nail services.
Janet has recently given the salon a facelift. She says after many years, it was just time for some upgrades and changes. Some of the equipment was wearing out as she bought it thirteen years ago, when it was already thirty years old. The shop turned out beautifully after some elbow grease and hard work from the ladies and a few other helpers; painting, Gerald Smith; plumbing, Danny Washam; furniture updates, Raymond Atkins; and woodworker, Ronnie Wilner. Everyone seems to love the changes that were made.
Janet is thankful that she has been busy with the makeover, because in the middle of it all her best friend of thirteen years and door greeter for the shop, SallyAnn, gained her angel wings and went to doggie Heaven. SallyAnn is deeply missed by everyone at the shop but especially by Janet.
Janet’s favorite part about being a hairdresser is making people feel good about themselves. She says she has made so many dear friends over the years from her profession. Her customers know her better than her family does, and they have been with her through all of her ups and downs. Over the years, many have graced the shop with their services including stylists: Beth Miller, Terry Dyer, Caitlyn Collins, and Kendra France; and nail techs, daughter Beth Holloway, Connie Williams, and Barbara McNeil.
She appreciates everyone that she has ever had an opportunity to service in her forty successful years of doing hair. She says, “It has truly been a blessing to get to know each and every one. We laugh, cry, listen to some tall tales, pray, and just whatever we need to do besides just work.”
