Looking Up
I don’t like to sit still. Never have and probably never will. Why? Because I am restless and I bore easily. This is one reason why I don’t like red lights.
One morning, I was sitting at the red light at the intersection of Emory Rd. and Maynardville Hwy. Being bored, I looked up. Scampering across the power lines above all the traffic was a squirrel.
At first, I was kinda jealous of that little guy. Not only did he not have to worry about sitting in traffic, but he could go anywhere he wanted. As for me, I still had 7 more traffic lights to deal with before I reached the office where I worked.
The squirrel seemed to be having a good time as he pranced around on the lines. He was completely oblivious to the potential danger literally under his dancing paws.
So what was keeping that little squirrel from being sautéed by all that electricity? God and the insulated coating around the power lines.
At that point, I began to feel like that squirrel. No, I didn’t get out of my car and shimmy up that pole and join him. I wondered how many times God had protected me when I was wasn’t even aware of the potential danger I was in or how devastating it could be.
Seriously, if we could somehow see all the things God has protected us from, we would probably be awestruck and terrified.
“The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.” Psalm 121:7 (KJV)
By the way, the next time you’re sitting at red light or riding as a passenger, look up from time to time and take in God’s creation. Over the years, I have seen some truly breathtaking views of the skies. If I had been looking at my phone or other cars, I would have missed them.
I love birds, so I am especially thrilled when I spot a hawk or an owl sitting on a power line. I wonder how many people have driven by them and had no idea they were there.
By the way, let me give you a word of warning. If you’re watching a bird while outside of your car, I would suggest not getting directly under the bird. That holds its own danger.
