In a year of new normals, this Christmas season poses an even greater feeling of excitement. We have stayed in and are accustomed to socially distancing and finding creative ways to share time with our families. It seems, in all of the things that 2020 has challenged us with, that the magic of the Christmas season feels even more joyful and exciting this year. Maybe there is a necessity to fulfill our hearts' needs; maybe we have a stronger, deeper appreciation for the small things; or maybe it is just exciting to say goodbye to this year and hope for a fresh new start for 2021.

As quickly as November has glimpsed by, December is creeping in as well. Many families have already dug out their Christmas decorations and began soaking in the embellishments of the season. Shopping has started, as this year, it feels like such a gesture to be able to give small, meaningful gifts to lift the spirits of the ones we love so dearly. As this year is a year not to get everything you want, but to be thankful for everything you have.

As you string those glowing lights, think back to a time when the family loaded up in Momma’s old station wagon with all the kids and a sack of snacks for a talkative and forever memorable ride around after dark adorning the shining strands of neighborhoods around town. Giggles from the back seat warm the hearts of mom and dad while so delicately and peacefully making memories that last a lifetime.

When you are hanging your tinsel, take a minute and register those decorations in the annual Light Up Union County event. All it takes is a quick minute and a photo of your finished lights to be a part of this special event. The goal is for Maynardville City and the entirety of Union County to be lit up and decorative through the Christmas season for families and passer-throughers to enjoy. UT Extension will even add the photos on Facebook for a sort of virtual viewing for those who may not get to get out and add in a little friendly competition to up the holiday spirits.

Simple or spectacular, register your Christmas lights! It is a quick way for you to show off your work, create a socially distanced, family friendly event, and make our little town feel warm and cozy like a little Hallmark movie of its own.
