Jeté of Faith
I love looking through catalogs. That probably started with the old Sears catalogs, especially their Christmas Wish books. As a child, I spent many hours sitting in my grandparents’ house as I flipped through its pages full of wondrous goodies.
A few years ago, I was working in a bank. Once a month, one of my coworkers would bring in a catalog and we would order stuff out of it. While it wasn’t from Sears, it was still fun to look through. My coworker ordered some fun games out of it as Christmas presents for her nephew. When the packages arrived at work, she placed her precious boxes at the end of the counter where she was stationed.
As luck would have it on this same day, I walked out of the kitchen to see a lobby full of customers. The next one in line was one of our usual ones. I motioned for him to go to my window as I sprinted across the back of the teller line. Being in a hurry, I didn’t look down. Does that explain a lot?
My right foot rammed into one of my coworker’s presents. It flew into the air and landed right in front of me. There was no way I was going to step on a child’s Christmas present and ruin it, so I did the only thing I could. When my left foot hit the ground, I pushed back up off it and leapt over the game. As I sailed through the air, I had my arms extended out for balance.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)
When I took my leap, I didn’t have time to second guess myself. I just did it. That’s how we should do when The Lord tells us to take a leap of faith. No questions. No second guessing. Just leap.
As for my customer, he was an outdoorsman like my husband Tim. So, we often talked about hunting and other outdoor things. After I came back to earth, I went straight to my teller window. I was completely surprised when he said to me, “I’m impressed. That was a great Jeté.”
I guess you can say, I learned the hard way a term for a leap in ballet from a deer hunter while I was running in a bank.
