Jesus Lantern

For Molly, she had looking forward to going to Papaw’s garden
She and her brother Johnny each get to pick out a pumpkin

Johnny looked at the large ones, but kicked the small ones away
Molly knew her pumpkin had to be special, so she closed her eyes to pray

She asked God to send her the perfect one to use
Something hit her foot, which sent mud on her shoes

It was a little pumpkin that Johnny had left behind
Molly picked it up and ran her hand over the rind

She ran back to Papaw with in it clutched tightly to her chest
God had answered her prayer with the one that was the best

Johnny always carved his own scary Jack-O-Lantern each year
Papaw said he would carve one for Molly that she wouldn’t fear

First Papaw cut the top off and placed his hands inside
Then he pulled out all of the pumpkin’s icky stuff threw it aside

He asked Molly to draw a face on the pumpkin that would please her
She drew circles, squares, and squiggly lines that ran here and there

When Papaw carved it, it didn’t look like she had imagined it to be
There were no eyes, nose, or a mouth that she could see

She cried that the pumpkin God had sent her way was now an ugly sight
Papaw wiped her tears away and said watch to see how God had made it right
Inside the hollowed-out pumpkin, he placed a candle and lit it so bright
There was the name of Jesus burning bright into the night.

Papaw went on to say how much like that pumpkin we are once Jesus is in our heart
The old icky stuff is gone forever to be replaced with His light that will sit up apart

Molly Knew her Papaw was right about her pumpkin
Her Jesus lantern was the best that have ever been.
