I'm Just A Kid
I have no problem admitting that I’m a geek. Why? Well, there are many reasons, but one of the big ones is my love for dinosaurs.
Even as a small child, they fascinated me. I guess you can say I loved dinosaurs before they were cool. Any time a dinosaur show or movie was on TV, I watched it. Let me tell you, I never missed an episode of “The Land of the Lost” on Saturday mornings. Also, I read every book on dinosaurs I could get my hands on. Unfortunately for me, that wasn’t as often as I would’ve liked.
My elementary school didn’t have a library and my family didn’t visit the local library too often. That’s why I would get so excited when the Bookmobile pulled into the school’s parking lot. I loved the whole experience. Unlike our classrooms, the bookmobile was air conditioned and it always smelled so nice and clean. And, most of all, I loved the smorgasbord of books.
Each time I made a bee-line to the section with the dinosaur books. I would always find at least one that I hadn’t read yet. It never occurred to me as to why that was. Anyway, once I had picked my dinosaur books, I would look for others if I didn’t have my three-book limit.
One day when I was checking out, the librarian of the bookmobile asked me what my name was. To say I was terrified is an understatement. Why? When I was a child, I was absolutely terrified of strangers and this guy was a tall and big stranger.
My mother had preached to me to be leery of strangers. And my dad loved to watch police shows such as: “Adam 12,” “Dragnet,” and “Hawaii 5-0.” So, in my mind, strangers were like the criminals I watched on these shows.
Needless to say, I was totally speechless. I just stared at him. The bookmobile librarian asked me my name again. Close to tears, I replied, “I’m only a kid!”
My teacher got on to me and told him my name. He gave me a look that made me feel as though he thought something was wrong with me. I don’t know, maybe he was right.
Then he went on to say, “I know she always checks out dinosaur books, so I try to make sure I have new ones in stock for her.”
It was one of those moments where I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me. Here he was being kind and thoughtful to me and I thought he may be some kind of criminal who wanted to hurt me.
“Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Hebrews 13:21 (KJV)
I don’t think the librarian realized it, but God was using him to help equip me. I needed to learn and have a passion for dinosaurs so I could write my book “Dinosaur Eggs.” My book isn’t like most others about dinosaurs. No siree. This book is an inspirational children’s book based on Ephesians 6.
Wonder if I could find that librarian now. I would like thank him and show him “Dinosaur Eggs.”
