The Union County Family and Community Education (FCE) group held their monthly meeting last month with a special trip to the Glenmore Mansion in Jefferson City. Known as one of the state's finest examples of Second Empire architectural style, the mansion, built in 1868, provided a fascinating historical backdrop for the gathering.
The massive three-story structure boasts 27 rooms and features a striking 30-foot tower that rises majestically above the roofline. Glenmore Mansion is the only house museum in Jefferson County open to the public, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the past. Since 1972, the mansion has been lovingly preserved and operated by the Glenmore Chapter of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities (APTA).
The Union County FCE members enjoyed a guided tour of the mansion, learning about its rich history and architectural significance. The visit not only served as their monthly meeting but also as an educational experience, highlighting the importance of historical preservation in Tennessee.
FCE President Carol Pratt and other members expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to explore such a well-preserved piece of local history. The group looks forward to future meetings and activities that continue to blend education, community and cultural enrichment.
Glenmore Mansion invites the public to attend "Christmas at Glenmore," its annual holiday event held during the first two weekends in December. During this special occasion, the 156-year-old mansion is beautifully decorated with festive greenery, bows, swags, trees and wreaths. Guests are welcomed with hot wassail and Victorian-style sweets served in the dining room. Visitors can take a step back in time to experience the hospitality, beauty and history of Glenmore during the Christmas season.
The next Union County FCE meeting will take place on November 21 at the Union County Extension Office, beginning at 10 a.m. Members are encouraged to bring a soup and/or sandwich to share.
