Farmers Market Kicks Off for 2021

Union County mayor Jason Bailey rings the opening bell for the kick-off of the 2021 Union County Farmers Market.

Shoppers from Union County and beyond took advantage of a beautiful spring day to attend the May 1 kick-off for the Union County Farmers Market. And the market was bustling with energy!
Local business owner Donna Riddle is president of the Union County Farmers Market Board. Jody Smith is the new manager of the market and Savannah Jones is assistant manager.
“We are continuing to grow thanks to two grants,” said Riddle. “This is the start of a great season.”
Union County Mayor Jason Bailey fired up the event with a welcome speech and the official ringing of the bell.
“I am so glad to see the market back open,” said Bailey. “And I am happy to say that the parking lot days are numbered, and I am grateful for the county commission. The new facility, Heritage Park, is about a month away and is going to be huge for Union County.”
The market has come full circle from its early days in front of the high school, then Wilson Park, and now back to the high school grounds; just in time to soon move once again to the new digs on the west side of the high school. Opening day for 2021 came about one month in front of the grand opening of the new Farmers Market Pavilion, aptly named Heritage Park, which will not only house vendors, but will provide a stage for musical entertainment, restrooms, demonstrations, and much more for those who visit each week.
Each week the market offers produce, handmade items, eggs, coffee, plants, sweet treats, meat, dairy, essential oils, special guests, and so much more. As the season progresses, the market will have plant and seed shares as well. The UT Extension Office is also on-site with helpful hints and demos. The board is looking for a chef to provide weekly cooking demonstrations.
The market runs May through October with hours 10-1 on Saturdays and 3-6 on Tuesdays. My experience, if you want fresh eggs, better come early!
