Family Resource Center is a conduit for community needs

Everyone in need is family.
This is the main principle behind the Union County Family Resource Center and its runners, Martha Warwick and Debbie Gillenwater. And they are two of the actual “runners” involved in the program in the truest sense of the word.
If you aren’t familiar with this resource, the first thing you need to know is that it was established more than 25 years ago. The second is that those involved work tirelessly for Union County.
“This resource has been here for Union County since before I came on board,” said Warwick. “The purpose was to provide support for families in need, and we have continued to serve these families in many different ways. We often have to move quickly to furnish essentials depending on the hardship. Our services have evolved and expanded over the years and the year 2020 caused another shift in our services as we listened to the needs of the county.”
The Union County Family Resource Center depends heavily on local churches, civic groups, businesses, school clubs and community members to help meet these needs. They have provided backpacks, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, diapers, food, clothing and a variety of items that have made it possible for the center to help many in need.
Warwick and Gillenwater said they were greatly appreciative of the continued support received from the community and county.
With the aid of the Saint Teresa of Kolkata Catholic Church, more than four hundred families received over 3,000 bags of groceries in March through June of 2020. Over 1,500 volunteer hours were logged during that time. The church continues to provide additional services and support to the Family Resource Center.
In October, 2020, the UCFRC was awarded a generous grant from the Laura J. Kress Angel Tree Fund (East Tennessee Foundation) that allowed them to provide over 100 teenagers with a better Christmas this past year.
Warwick and Gillenwater receive suggestions and notice when a family is in need, usually through the Union County school system. They then meet with the family to assess the needs and follow through with provisions.
“There are many other anonymous services provided to students and families throughout each year that are initiated through the resource center,” said Warwick.
The center accepts donations in the form of non-perishable food items, clothing, hygiene products, cleaning products and school supplies.
Warwick and Gillenwater said they are currently well stocked, and they are grateful that they can call on their community when specific needs arise.
