Fall Bluebird House Cleaning
The Smoky Mountain Homeschool 4-H Group watching Mr. Bill Morgan’s demonstration.
By Abigail Thomas
The Smoky Mountain Homeschool 4-H Club met at Big Ridge State Park on Tuesday, October 24th. The club started the meeting off with Mr. Bill Morgan giving a demonstration on how to build a bluebird house, how to maintain it, and why bluebirds are beneficial to our environment. After the demonstration, everyone walked around the park going from house to house to clean them out. Most houses were full with previously used nests and only one still being occupied. Bluebirds may raise two and sometimes three broods per season. Pairs might build their second nests on top of the first nest or they might nest in an entirely new site. Once all of the houses were clean, club members enjoyed various activities that Big Ridge State Park has to offer.
Big Ridge State Park has a variety of activities for the whole family to enjoy! From hiking on one of the 15 miles of trails to playing in the park; there is something for everyone to do! The next time you are at Big Ridge State Park, make sure you take the time to notice these 4-H bluebird houses! If you have any questions or would like more information about joining a 4-H club, please call the Union County UT Extension Office at (865) 992-8038.
