Eight absent at August meeting: Commission unable to perform duties

Commissioners ask Dr. James Carter about plans for the middle school and the colleges.

Only eight of the 16 commissioners attended the Union County Commission meeting on August 22. All in attendance will serve another four years except Commissioner Janet Holloway, who ended her term with this meeting. But the absence of the other commissioners who lost their seats but were still acting commissioners caused the county business to be postponed until September. Nine members present are needed for a quorum to take any action.
Unable to do business, Mayor Jason Bailey recognized Dr. James Carter for some announcements regarding the new middle school. Dr. Carter stated that the Latham property had been purchased for $495,000 and that the property already had access to infrastructure like water and sewer. He also commented that the state had hired an architect to design the new Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) and the Walters State Community College additions to Union County High School.
The next meeting of the Union County Commission will be on September 26 when the Chairman and Vice Chairman will be elected. Also nine of the 16 who will be seated were not elected to the previous commission. New committees will be assigned by Mayor Bailey.

Commissioners Bill Cox and Dawn Flatford along with the rest of Commission applaud Commissioner Janet Holloway for her service and dedication to the First District and Union County.

Incoming Commissioner Lynn Beeler chats with Attorney David Myers after the meeting.
