Congressional Recognition for Late City Mayor

Tennessee Congressman Chuck Fleishmann and Representative Dennis Powers made a visit to Union County on Monday, August 5, 2019 to present an honor to a local family and give an update on projects in Washington, D.C.

After introductions by Union County Mayor Jason Bailey, Representative Powers was honored to present a Joint Resolution of the House of Representatives signed by Governor Bill Lee to honor the late H.E. “Smiley” Richardson. The resolution was formed to honor the memory of former City Mayor Richardson and recognize his rapidness to express his love of God, family, friends, and community. Smiley truly was “an exemplary public servant and worked to improve the quality of life for fellow citizens,” stated Powers.

With twenty four years of service to the City of Maynardville, the honor to the late mayor reflected fondly on his noble character and commitment that he held to service. Smiley’s wife, the elegant Carolyn Richardson was present to graciously accept the award on behalf of the family.

After the sincere recognitions, Congressman Chuck Fleishmann was welcomed and began with sharing how blessed he is to represent his eleven counties, yet defining the foremost purpose of the trip to be so that he could take part in the presentation of the resolution honoring Mr. Richardson. Then he continued reflecting on his memory of Smiley’s devotion and influence, followed by a plaque of Congressional Recognition.

Moving on into the politics, the congressman stressed how good the economy is at the current time. He mentioned that he has spent some time with President Trump, most recently during a trip to the border regarding the border wall. He shared that Trump is, in his opinion, easy to work with and loves Tennessee, which we can all appreciate.

Fleishmann talked about the role of congress and some of the tasks he takes part in. He was asked early on to be on the Appropriations Committee, which is the committee that funds everything. He acts as Tennessee’s appropriator. In addition, he is a part of the Energy and Water Subcommittee which funds everything the Department of Energy works on, such as Oak Ridge and the $6 billion in federal funds per year that are applied there.

There is discussion of the problems of immigration and how the system is being overrun causing dangerous conditions, humanity problems, and a national security crisis. Border control is questioned by attendees with a reason for many of the troubles caused during the process of citizenship being blamed on a back log of issues.

All in all, the trip was very positive and inviting to the community to ask questions openly. As the visit came to close, the congressman announced that on September 21st, there will be an Academy held in Clinton, TN for folks in the area that are interested in joining the Coast Guard or other services to attend. It will be free and informative.
