Close Call
Have you ever heard a noise you couldn’t explain? This happened to me many years at one of my previous jobs. I didn’t think anything about it until one of my coworkers yelled at me.
The office I worked in at this time was always cold. It was that way even in the summer time. Often, the customers who came into the office would complain: “You all hanging meat in here somewhere?”
In the winter, I would run a heater at my feet. For the record, the heaters were supplied by the company. On this one particular day, I didn’t have it sitting at my feet. Instead, I had it plugged into the wall behind me. I don’t know why I did that, but it was a good thing. Or maybe I should call it a “God” thing.
I was working away at my desk when I began to hear a loud, high-pitched hissing noise. To be honest, I didn’t think anything about it because I was so focused on what I was doing. That is until one of my coworkers yelled: “Brooke!! Look behind you!” I swung my chair around to see bright sparks of fire spewing from the plug where the heater was plugged into the socket. It reminded me of the sparklers my parents would light for me on July Fourth when I was little. I absolutely loved holding it as sliver sparks leapt off of it.
I jumped up from my chair and ran to the middle of the room. My coworker joined me. Both of us knew the heater needed to be unplugged, but we were too afraid to get close it. Since this was an electrical event, our fear wasn’t just being burned, it was also being shocked or possible electrocuted. One of the men in the office ran over and used his foot to jerk the heater plug out of the socket.
After our coworker yanked out the plug, he said something along the line of the heater had cycled back the electricity. I am not an electrician, but from what I gather, the heater had sent the electricity back into the socket. It couldn’t handle the flow so it spewed out the extra electricity.
“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.” Psalm 23:5 (KJV)
I know this is going to sound strange, but as Believers, we should be that way with the Holy Spirit. When we open our hearts up to Him, we should be so filled that it spills out of us and onto others around us. Imagine what a difference that would make in our community or even the world.
Do I still use heaters? Not too much, but not because of what happened in the office. Let’s just say my body has decided to turn up my internal thermostat to high. Sometimes, I am amazed others don’t feel the heat emanating from me. So, if you are at a store and see me standing with my head in a freezer, just walk on by.
