The Browders

Dave, Tommy, Matthew and Sonya Browder

Brothers Matt and David Browder were young when they began traveling with their dad, Tommy Browder, in 1990. Matt recalls that at the age of 10 or 11 he actually began singing with his dad and around the age of 13 he learned three-part harmony. Tommy Browder had started singing gospel music at the age of 5, despite being stricken with polio. “My right hand was completely paralyzed from polio,” he recalls. Then one day, his thumb started working, then his fingers and then he regained enough strength in his right hand to be able to play the guitar. The Browders initially came from Hiltons Virginia, the hometown of the original Carter Family. They take inspiration from the legendary country group; but are dedicated to being authentically themselves.

Sonya Ludwig Browder was born in Maine. Her family was storing a piano for the pastor’s wife and the instrument grabbed Sonya’s interest. She started studying piano at the age of 4 and was on the road full-time with a group when she was 15. She met the Browders when her group was booked for a concert in Tennessee. The two families became friends. Sonya later joined the Browders as a vocalist and pianist and, many years later, married Matthew. They now have 3 beautiful children and live in Kingsport TN.

The Browders are armed with an abundance of talent, playing both modern and classic Southern Gospel styles. They have become one of Christian music’s most acclaimed groups, a dynamic sound with seasoned voices and beautiful harmonies. Matthew Browder plays rhythm guitar, Dave Browder plays bass guitar, Sonya Browder plays piano, patriarch Tommy Browder plays guitar. They all take turns at lead vocals. Multi-talented musicians, all four of them are also excellent songwriters. They are a family group that is rapidly gaining recognition and admiration in gospel music. The family’s album “Time Machine” had a record-breaking seven #1 hits! Their latest CD, “Authentic”, brings listeners progressive Southern Gospel music and includes the #1 song “You’re Not in This Alone”.

The Browders will be in Maynardville with the Poet Voices for one night only. On May 18, 2024, they will be performing at the Patelke Auditorium at the Union County High School in Maynardville. Doors open at 6:00. Tickets available online at https://www.itickets.com/events/477557
