Broiler workshops
Chickens are one of the best pets. What other pet can poop breakfast?
Eggs are only one of the many benefits of chickens. Most chickens fall into two categories, layers and broilers. Layers are defined as chickens whose primary purpose to lay eggs. Broilers are defined as chickens primary purpose is for meat production.
Broilers gain weight quickly and efficiently to develop a heavy muscled carcass. Many folks have raised chickens for their own meat and eggs for many years. However, recently due to supply chain issues and the demand locally produced food, more people are interested in growing broilers for sale.
If you are interested in meat chickens, UT Extension in Claiborne County is offering workshops for broiler production for home and small scale resale.
Classes are free and open to everyone. Registration is required. Classes will be offered on July 5 and 7. Depending on your goals, you can choose to attend one or both classes. The topics will be different.
The first class focuses on broilers for home and resale production. It will cover breed selection, production, housing, equipment, food safety and preservation. Class will be held at the Claiborne County Courthouse starting at 6 p.m. on July 5.
The second class will focus on resale as it will cover State of Tennessee regulations, direct sale, liability and safety. Class will be held at the Claiborne County Courthouse starting at 6 p.m. on July 7.
