Arrgh! Me Maties

I wasn’t the only one who suffered from my eye problem. My parents did as well.
It all started when my parents noticed my left eye wasn’t moving the same as my right one. At time, I was around 3 years old. They took me to an eye doctor who told them I would outgrow it. Unfortunately, I didn’t. So, they took me to another eye doctor when I was 6.
He told them my left eye was a lazy eye. If they had brought me to him years ago, he could have already fixed my eyes and I wouldn’t have needed glasses. But since it was too late for that, he would have to work fast to correct the problem before I became any older.
Not only did he put me in glasses, but he also had a patch placed over the right lens so it would make my left eye work and build up muscle. Oh, it gets better. My parents had to place eye drops in my left eye every night. I don’t know who was more traumatized; me or my parents.
In some of my other stories, I talked about how my mom was so squeamish. She used to pull my baby teeth by wrapping a string around one and turning her head as she yanked on it. Well, no surprise that she couldn’t give me eye drops either. That job went to my dad. He struggled to get the drops in my eye as my mom tried to hold my head still long enough for him to do it. I can still remember fighting them. Bless their hearts.
“Set your affection on things above, not on things of the earth.” Colossians 3:2 (KJV)
How many times do we as Believers have limited vision in that we let things in the here and now upset us without thinking about our future with the Lord. Our hope lies with Him. Everything in this world will one day pass away.
My parents’ struggle paid off. My left eye works much better than it did when I was a child. Actually, I can look back on that time now and laugh. Seriously. One day, I was looking through old pictures and saw the group class photo where I was wearing the patched glasses and my purse. I used to always wear a little pocketbook with a long strap draped across me. I realized all I needed was a parrot sitting on my shoulder to look like a pirate. Ironically, every time I left the eye doctor’s office, I got to pick a prize out of his treasure chest sitting by the door.
Argh me maties!
