4-H Students “Walk Across TN”
This spring UT Extension challenged our elementary school 4-H clubs to “Walk Across TN.” Each class received a state map, logbook, and pedometers to track their progress. By wearing pedometers to track steps during the day, students got to see how active they are compared to their peers. They encouraged each other to participate in healthy movement throughout the day in a shared goal of making it across the state. By logging steps taken, students learned about record keeping and used important math skills. Through walking and record keeping, classes tracked their progress walking the length of the state of TN. Physical activity has been shown to decrease stress, improve health, and improve learning for youth.
We are so proud of all 4th and 5th grade students who participated. If your child participated, ask them how they felt walking across the whole state! We are fortunate to have some wonderful walking areas in Union County for families to increase activity and be more active. But one of the best things students learned during this program is that we can increase our movement and activity in our day-to-day routines.
This fall, UT Extension will hold an 8-week walking challenge where teams can walk the length of TN themselves. Whether your team is made up of family, co-workers, or friends; we will encourage in a healthy challenge to increase our movement. Weekly “health breaks newsletters” will provide helpful tips on everything from stretching to safety.
