1st Annual Veterans Appreciation Day

On November 9, the Saturday before Veterans Day, Union County Veterans, their family members and anyone who simply wants to show their appreciation for our Veterans will gather at Wilson Park from 11:00-3:00. The American Legion Post 212 will supply 8 smoked pork butts, the 33 Diner will provide chicken nuggets and mashed potatoes. Rounding out the menu will be the Veteran Day standby: hotdogs! And you can’t beat the price! It’s all free.

Fighting between the Allies and Germany in World War I stopped on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. November 11,1918, was proclaimed the War to End All Wars. Veterans Day, originally called Armistice Day, continues to be observed on November 11th every year. It is a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and their willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Our good.

Sixteen million Americans served in WWII. Sixteen million. In 2022, just over 167,000 of them were alive. 1.8 million Americans served in the Korean War, 2.7 million served in the Vietnam War, and 650,000 served in the Gulf War. It is estimated that around 2000 veterans presently live right here in Union County.

Staff Sgt. Ryan C. Knauss, assigned to 9th Battalion, 8th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne), died as a result of wounds sustained from an attack at the Hamid Karzai International Airport, where he was supporting noncombatant evacuation operations on Aug. 26, 2021, in Kabul, Afghanistan. Knauss was a native of Corryton, Tennessee. A plaque was made for SSG Knauss and will be presented to his mother, Paula Knauss, at this Veterans Appreciation Day event, with gratitude from his community.

This Veterans Appreciation Picnic is for all who want to celebrate our Veterans. There will be door prizes as well as cornhole, horseshoes and other games. Bring your own chair and an appetite. Saturday November 9 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. Free!

Hope y’all can make it.
